When MyCharge gave me an All Terrain Portable Charger to review, they really pushed the fact that it could be used outdoors. They told me it was an “IP68 military grade All Terrain portable charger.” They told me it was water-proof, temperature-proof, dirt-proof, and shock-proof as though I was the kind of father who went camping regularly, or worked on a construction site. And you know what, were I more masculine, I could see how this would be appealing. And if you are married to one of those masculine dudes, I assume it would be an awesome gift. But here’s the deal. I work in an office. I don’t have calloused hands, and I don’t wear leather boots. I don’t camp much, and I’ve never shot a living animal.
What I do have, however, is an 8-year-old son who destroyed my sofa with Silly Putty, a 5-year-old daughter who regularly drops my iPad, and a 1-year-old who poured a cup of water on my wife’s two-month-old MacBook Air! I don’t know what happens in the woods, or on constructions sites, but I know that my kids have the ability to destroy… really… anything. Within moments of opening the MyCharge box, my toddler stuck the damn thing in her mouth. I left it on the table, and my son got ahold of it, took it in his room, dropping it once along the way, and used it to charge his Kindle. At one point I found it in my refrigerator (not sure who the culprit was) and I twice I dug it out of my 5-year-olds toy box.
Regardless of what my kids threw at the sucker, I picked it up, wiped it off, and plugged it in, and it worked.
At one point my wife came up to me and said, “Where’s that charger thing?” She was heading to the grocery store, her phone was almost dead, and she needed to see her shopping list. She plugged the MyCharge into her phone while she shopped, and was able to still see her list. Worked like a charm. I used it to charge my tablet while I was viewing slides for work. It was great because I didn’t have to be tethered to an outlet.
My wife says it saved her shopping trip, and I don’t have to worry about keeping it safe like I do with my other electronics because it’s built to be beaten. I can say, honestly, that the MyCharge has become very handy.
